Photos to Fabric One Slice At A Time

I gotta give props to my girl Ronnie... she photos...she quilts....she rubs my tummy.


Miami Valley Art Quilt Network (MVAQN) is a quilt guild that Ronnie belongs to and they have just completed a special project known as "Dayton Landmarks" (or some days "damn Dayton Landmarks").

It all started with an idea.  Take pictures of Dayton landmarks, divide the pictures up into equal slices, distribute the slices to different quilters, have the quilters interpret those slices in their own unique style independent of each other, bring the slices back together to form a quilt of sorts that represents the original picture.

Photos were submitted, images were chosen, printed, sliced, distributed, slices were made, and the quilting began, and finally the slices found each other and an amazing exhibit has been mounted.

I am pleased to announce that six "Slice Quilts" based on Ronnie's photographs of Dayton landmarks are now hanging in a special exhibit at the Schuster Center in downtown Dayton.  They will be there until June 24 so make plans to go see them. (parking info)

These "Slice Quilts" are amazing pieces of ART and worth the trip to see them.  If you can't make it to the Schuster before the exhibit comes down (June 24th) not to worry, they will be traveling to different venues and I'll be sure to keep you informed.  You can thank me later.

How Novel!

Are you just hanging out this summer with nothing to do?

Then may I suggest you hie yourself to the nearest library and sign up for the summer reading program.

For one thing it is cool. I mean they probably have air conditioning and there is nothing like sucking up someone else's cool air in summer.

For another thing it is cool. I mean there is nothing cooler in attitude than getting educated. Don't you like being smarter? There is no place like the library to get smarter in the summer.

And another thing is that it is cool. I mean the library has all kinds of cool things to do; computers, movies, books on tape, and books, loads and loads of all kinds of cool books. There is no place to do cool things in the summer like the library. PLUS during the summer reading program there are usually some pretty cool prizes. How cool is that?!

So, tell me, what is your favorite book? I have several favorites but one I really, really love is titled "My Life in Dog Years", by Gary Paulsen. You just gotta get it and spend some quality time reading. You will laugh, you will cry, you will want to run out and get a dog just like me.

Just to add on to the last post....
go to this site: click on Special Exhibits from the left column, THEN click on Journal Quilt Project II at the TOP of the next page, (sorry I tried to do a direct link and it didn't work) and then you can finally take a look at the artist's quilt and some of the others that were in the exhibit.
Remarkable stuff!

Not to worry...if you want to see the quilts in person, and couldn't make it to Houston, perhaps you could attend the show in Chicago or Long Beach.

Quilts and Grandmothers

"Once Upon a Time All the World Was Bright and Beautiful"

If you ask anybody over the age of 40 about their grandmother, they will probably have a story about a quilt. It may be a warm memory of snuggling under a quilt on a cold winter's night or sitting under the frame watching the needle dance in and out.

There is no better feeling than being wrapped up in quilted love waiting on a grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup.

Many years ago, the artist's grandmother had Alzheimer's. When Ami Simms put out a Call for Entries, the artist had to make a quilt (because that is what she does).

"Once Upon A Time..." is her entry, which got accepted into a special exhibit that has been touring the country since August 2006. Read their story at Quilter's Save Our Stories, and if it comes anywhere close to where you live, you should make plans to go see it. Oh, there is a book and a CD you can order if you can't wait on the exhibit.

The artist doesn't make the same kind of quilts as her grandmother did. Her quilts are generally too small to warm the body, but hopefully on a good day, they will warm the soul.
