Don't say I didn't warn you....

This weekend Daylight Saving Time reverts back to Daylight Standard Time and I am going to be one grumpy dog for at least a month.  Did you realize that we had DST for over seven months this year?

Changing the time doesn't save time and it doesn't save daylight so why, oh why, does the government force us to change our clocks back and forth, back and forth, endlessly??

The time of year determines how many daylight hours we have.  If you want to enjoy the daylight hours then plan your day around when the sun rises and sets and LEAVE ME ALONE!!

Jeff Rutledge's new show

Discover Your Inner Child, a place peace never left. 

Dayton artist Jeff Rutledge explores the place of our inner child. A place where we see the world and each other through the eyes of a child. The exhibition will show through Dec. 11th.

*I am putting on my critic's hat and delving into the world or art.

I have to admit a slight prejudice as my photographer has known Jeff Rutledge for a pretty long time.  In fact, if you go to the show and see a picture of a (much) younger Jeff you'll get a fairly good idea of how old Jeff was when he and David met.  I have no idea how long that might be in dog years!

Another small prejudice I might have is about the Missing Peace Art Space, a charming and cozy space that has done an outstanding job in creating a comfortable atmosphere in which to display art.  I admit I have actually licked the face of the owner's child and it tasted really good.

 Most people probably know Jeff for his sculpture, and this show has plenty of that, but the walls are covered with Jeff's bright paintings full of whimsical and textured imagery.

Make a point to go see this exhibit, you'll be glad you did.

I thought there was a new Star Trek series...

In the past couple of months I have been hearing about "Keeping Up with the Cardassians" and I thought someone had delved into the archives of the late Gene Roddenberry and come with a new idea to keep the Star Trek franchise going. 

After all, six television series, eleven films, books, comics, games and collectibles cannot possibly be the only ideas to keep die hard Trekkies satisfied.

Then I started hearing about a Cardassian getting a divorce after only 72 days and it began to dawn on me that just maybe something else may be going on.

So I did a little research....and I am almost speechless (but not entirely).  There is a whole new set of Cardassians out there.  Of course they have changed the spelling somewhat, but when you take a closer look you can see they are the real thing. 

Check out a synopsis and the episode guide on Wikipedia.  Only a science fiction show could get away with such far fetched ideas.  Gene would be proud.

El Dia de los Muertos

Day of the Dead is not Halloween....

Life is Unfinished Business:  a quilt by my artist!

Though it could be easy to mix them up, both have skeletons, costumes, decorations, tombstones and involve food, they are completely different holidays.

El Dia de los Muertos (or Day of the Dead) is an ancient celebration in Mexico dating back to way-y-y-y-y before the Spanish Conquistadors.

Not coincidentally, it coincides with the Catholic holy days of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day (but that is a whole 'nuther post).



It is a joyous, multi-day celebration that embraces death as an integral part of life.

Pumpkin Pie Wars

It is inevitable, every Fall the pumpkin pie war takes up right where it let off the year before.

First, pumpkin pie appears on Frisch's menu, and the photographer can't wait to eat there (giving up his normal Waffle House fare) so he can savor the pie he has been waiting a year for.

 Then, pumpkins appear in the grocery stores and farmer's markets, making the artist want to put on her apron and start cooking her pumpkin pie from scratch. 

The trouble begins when they discuss the finer points of what makes up a good pumpkin pie.  The artist doesn't like cloves, allspice, or pumpkin pie spice. She maintains her pie tastes more "pumpkin-y" without them.  The photographer insists that without all the right spices the pie doesn't taste like a pumpkin pie should taste.

The funny thing is, he'll eat her pie if it is in front of him.  He doesn't like it, but he'll it it.  He is kinda like a dog that way.  I'll eat just about anything in front of me too.
